My old Sony Ericsson T610 phone was falling apart so I got a new phone today.

This combined with the content advisor that comes standard with most browsers provide parents with the ability to screen indecent material from their minor children.

My problem with this bill is two-fold. First it makes failure to properly identify your site as having adult material a felony. Therefore, an adult webmaster who makes a simple mistake when coding his or her website could become a felon.

Second, it is this inexplicable belief that somehow by forcing a labeling system on the adult industry you are somehow protecting children from those who are out on the internet preying on them is simply ludicrous.

An underage child who accidentally visits an adult website is only at risk of seeing nudity and being shown things that most parents are uncomfortable discussing with them. They are not at risk from predators. They are at risk from the internet predators from sites of the likes of Xanga, Myspace and the other social sites that currently exist and because these sites are not “adult sites”, there would be no legal requirement for them to present any warning, either to children or their parents.

In other words, this bill does absolutely nothing to truly help protect your children from the predators and other elements that exist on the internet whose intention is to harm them. It does very little to actually hide porn from their eyes since US law does not affect the rest of the entire world. It does potentially add a whole new class of criminal, a guy who is trying to make a living selling something which does seem to have a demand.

Oh, and in an election year, it does make for good sound bites from politicians who either don’t truly understand where the threat to your children are coming from or who are so into wanting to censor the adult industry that they are willing to lie to you in order to give you the impression that they have your best interests at heart.

I want to repeat this, this bill does absolutely nothing to protect your children from the predators on the internet who want to do harm to them. It does nothing to change what you have been watching if you have been following some of the Dateline reports that have been shown recently on television. It does very little to make it so that your child does not see porn on the internet.

It does give politicians a chance to beat their chests and give their constituents the very false impression that they are looking out for their best interest in attempting to somehow protect their children while they are on the internet. Don’t let them lie to you, write your congress person, write your Senator, tell them that they are full of shit. It’s not your interest or your childrens interest they are protecting here. Let them know, this is wrong and ineffective.
