According to this story in News.Com, the House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a bill that would make it a federal felony for Webmasters to use innocent words like “Barbie” or “Furby” but actually feature sexual content on their sites. Anyone using word like these could face up to 20 years in prison.
What the fuck are these people thinking. First what ever happened to the principles our government was founded on. You remember, democracy, freedom of speech don’t you? Those principles our founding fathers fought and died for. Those principles that we are being told we need to fight and die for today in Iraq. They somehow don’t apply at home anymore.
Second, how many pornstars and strippers use the name Barbie or actually have that name? If you happen to have been using it, it’s no longer allowed…but only if your image is going to be displayed on a website.
Censorship of any type is wrong. Even if the intention is understandable, once you go down that road once, it becomes much easier to do it again…and again…and again.
I’m not normally a politically motivated person but much of the recent things I’ve been mentioning here on the XXX Blog Maniac has really gotten me concerned. Some of it, true, is aimed at the adult industry and therefore close to my heart but these are things that rip at some of the basic tenants of our freedoms, our democracy and it seems totally hypocritical that at home we do this and yet, in other places around the world we fight for their democracy. If I can see the hypocracy in that, don’t you think others do as well. Perhaps it’s hypocracies like this that cause the world to hate us as they do.
Problem is, I’m not convinced that changing from GOP to democrat would change a damn thing. I really think this country needs a strong third party. One that understood that personal liberty should not and can not be comprimised. To quote Captain Kirk from Star Trek III, sometimes the needs of the one outway the needs of the many. When it comes to preserving personal freedoms that statement is definately true.
Also, will somebody please write their congressman and remind them that the internet is an international enteprise and that passing laws that govern it is like pissing in the wind. They have little to no affect except to create a whole new brand of criminal within this country. US law has no affect on the rest of the world. So creating all the laws you want that stiffle what a law abiding webmaster does only works to cripple his ability to compete on an international scale. In other words, all laws like this does is create another class of criminal. It does nothing to solve the problem they state is their goal. I hate to keep hammering on that but sometimes you have to beat that dead horse before it starts to sink into other peoples skulls.
